Specialist Epilepsy Care at Home

Nurse-led epilepsy care at home follows individual assessments, with ITU nurse input where needed. Care teams receive face-to-face, in-house training.

NEURAL CONNECTIONS

Specialist Epilepsy, Home Care

Epilepsy affects people differently, and support requirements vary. Individual assessments, with input from experienced ITU nurses where required, help determine the level of care needed at home. Care plans reflect seizure types, prescribed treatments, routines and individual preferences.

Care may include seizure monitoring, medication, personal care, overnight support and prescribed rescue medication where needed. Dedicated care teams receive face-to-face, in-house training in individual seizure plans, with care regularly reviewed as needs change.

Understanding how epilepsy affects you

Epilepsy causes seizures, which can look and feel different from person to person. Care should reflect the person’s usual seizure pattern, assessed needs and preferences.

  • Seizures may involve changes in awareness, sensations or movement.
  • Some people need time, rest or reassurance after a seizure.
  • An individual care plan helps people understand the right support.

Independence includes having choice and control, even when you need support.

Care begins

Care begins with regular reviews, updates and communication.

We provide personalised care for people with complex epilepsy, including those with other complex health needs. Support can include seizure observation and recording, prescribed medication support and help with daily routines. Our ITU nurses provide clinical oversight and regular visits, with care guided by the person’s specialist epilepsy team and individual seizure care plan.

We plan care around the person’s seizure patterns, known risks, preferences and daily activities. Our ITU nurses provide clinical oversight of the care plan, including agreed responses to seizures and when to seek emergency help. Familiar routines and appropriately trained staff help support safety, comfort and independence at home. Our ITU nurses complete individual risk assessments covering seizure patterns, daily activities and any overnight support needs.

Funding may be available through NHS Continuing Healthcare for adults, Children’s Continuing Care, local authority or jointly funded packages, Personal Health Budgets or private funding. Having epilepsy alone does not determine eligibility; the person’s assessed needs and relevant criteria apply. Our ITU nurses assess clinical requirements and provide oversight, while our team discusses funding routes.

Our ITU nurses lead face-to-face, in-house training and regular training in the home, tailored to the person’s seizure types and care plan. Training covers recognising and recording seizures, seizure first aid and escalation. Where rescue medication is prescribed, staff receive the required training and competency assessment to follow the individual protocol, supported by ongoing clinical oversight.

Yes, where assessment identifies a need for waking-night or 24-hour support. Our ITU nurses assess the person’s care requirements alongside specialist advice and provide ongoing clinical oversight. Observation arrangements and any prescribed monitoring equipment are agreed individually, with regular reviews to keep care aligned with the seizure care plan. On-call clinical support is available to the care team for concerns arising between visits, with escalation guided by the individual’s care plan. Risk assessments are reviewed when needs or circumstances change.

Use our online referral form or contact our team. Where available, share the seizure care plan, medication details, rescue medication protocol and current risk assessments. Our ITU nurses review suitability, complete risk assessments and plan clinical oversight. Care starts once funding, any equipment and staff training and competencies are in place.
